I have tried so many minimalist wallets that it has become a running
joke between my wife and me. This fad caught on with me about 2 years
ago and I started to search for the best wallet out there. I've tried
several different brands of wallets ranging from about 3 different
styles attempting to do the same thing. Distil Union has always been my
favorite, but I have tried some of the aluminum plate wallets as well
with mixed results. From a design and functionality standpoint Distil
Union wallets are the best. I think with the Wally Micro I finally
found the perfect wallet and I can move on to my next great adventure.
The Wally Micro accomplishes everything that a minimalist wallet should. It allows you to pack a large amount of items (In mine I keep 4 credit/debit cards, my license, an airline lounge pass, my metro card, and 4 insurance cards) into a very small space that fits comfortably in both pocket and hand. Out of all the wallets I've owned, this is probably the smallest yet it holds more than many of the larger wallets. It is truly the burrito of wallets. The design is quite simple. A folded piece of leather with a pull tab tucked in to it allows you to store many items and quickly retrieve them and then put them back in the wallet when no longer needed. I like to order my cards in order of most frequently used so my most used credit card and metro card is at the front while my insurance cards are at the back with my license falling somewhere in the center. One of the big issues I've had with minimalist wallets is carrying cash though. I don't need to carry wads of cash, but I also need to carry more than one bill and access it easily. Can the walley help me with that problem? Yes, absolutely, and the thing that I like about it is that they efficiently use the design of the wallet to accomplish this. It's not an extra pocket or an unnecessary band. The wallet itself is held closed by an elastic band that is sewn in to one side and wraps around the other. This effectively keeps the wallet shut so nothing falls out, but also gives you a great place to store some cash. I find that I can comfortably carry 4 bills that are folded twice (that is to say fold them in half twice). This is the perfect number of bills for me to carry as with the increased use of EFTs, apple/android/Samsung pay etc I really only need to carry cash to pay bus fare.
From an aesthetic standpoint, I love the look of the wallet. The colors you can choose from are great. I picked the Grey/Red and use the red as the outside material. Its a solid red color...not too flashy, but looks cool.
To me, the Walley Micro is Distil Union's crown jewel. They have outdone themselves with this design and it isn't even particularly complicated which is why I like it so much. In fact, its about as simple as it gets and I'm surprised no one else had thought of this design before. Pack up your bags and go home - there is no need to spend more people hours on making wallets any simpler and functional than this. They've nailed it.
On a final note, I will say that I have had quality issues with a few of Distil Union's products in the past. To date, I've been using this wallet for about 2 weeks and have had no issues but will update my review should anything come up. That being said, I think Distil Union is a creative bunch of people with a strong understanding of what excellent customer service means. Not only do they try to fix any disappointments that you may have had with their products, but they listen to your suggestions and I have seen them incorporate those suggestions, more than once, in to updated product designs. If you ever have a problem with their wallets rest assured that they are going to make it right.
